Sustainable Development Goal 16
Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
Why it matters
The bigger picture
Transparent and accountable institutions are the foundation of social trust and sustainable development. Young people's participation in decision-making contributes to strengthening democratic culture.
Reducing violence and corruption goes hand in hand with building strong institutions and equal access to justice.
The 2030 Agenda does not treat Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions in isolation from the other sixteen goals. Progress depends on inclusive policies, reliable data, long-term investment, and cooperation between public institutions, civil society, academia, and the private sector. Connecting local action to measurable outcomes is therefore essential for turning the global framework into lasting change.
