Why it matters

The bigger picture

Marine ecosystems are a livelihood source for billions of people and a key part of climate balance. Pollution and overfishing are rapidly depleting these resources.

Protecting coastal and marine ecosystems directly affects both biodiversity and the economic future of coastal communities.

The 2030 Agenda does not treat Life Below Water in isolation from the other sixteen goals. Progress depends on inclusive policies, reliable data, long-term investment, and cooperation between public institutions, civil society, academia, and the private sector. Connecting local action to measurable outcomes is therefore essential for turning the global framework into lasting change.
