Sustainable Development Goal 11
Sustainable Cities and Communities
Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
Why it matters
The bigger picture
As urbanization accelerates, the need for accessible housing, transport, and green spaces grows. Participatory planning processes developed in cooperation with local governments are key to sustainable cities.
Disaster-resilient urban infrastructure and the protection of cultural heritage are integral parts of sustainable urbanization.
The 2030 Agenda does not treat Sustainable Cities and Communities in isolation from the other sixteen goals. Progress depends on inclusive policies, reliable data, long-term investment, and cooperation between public institutions, civil society, academia, and the private sector. Connecting local action to measurable outcomes is therefore essential for turning the global framework into lasting change.
